By the mid-1990s, Bill Bryson was an established bestseller in his adopted home of Great Britain, but success had not come so readily in the US market. ![]()

Specifically, he said that it was, “my best read, one of my favourite books of all time in fact. How then, I wondered, had it not won out in round one? I tried to read the story that had taken the proverbial cake in the first round of that group of stories, THE PATH OF FLAMES ( EBR review), and quit after about 65 pages. So the situation left me wondering if I was a dummy, or if perhaps I might just like Senlin Ascends. So, I decided to put my money where my mouth was–or more specifically, I guess, my money where Mark Lawrence’s mouth was–and I bought both of the currently self-published Books of Babel. ![]() SENLIN ASCENDS ( Amazon) is the first of the Books of Babel by author Josiah Bancroft and another of the novels that was originally submitted to The Great Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off run by none other than Mark Lawrence. In the normal scheme of things, this book would likely have never crossed my line of sight, but I am ridiculously glad that it did. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Some are entertaining while others border on tangent. In between, the author attempts to connect thousands of years of drinking history with a myriad of anecdotes and asides. The book begins with a deep dive into the role of alcohol in ancient Chinese and Egyptian civilizations and ends with a somewhat rambling discussion of the upward trajectory of booze consumption in the U.S. To embark on digesting this 500 page volume is to, quite literally, go back to history class. Few authors, however, attempt to cover all types of alcohol, much less place it in the context of recorded history, but that’s exactly what Iain Gately has done in his sizable tome Drink: A Cultural History of Alcohol. Spirits books, mostly focusing on the recent whiskey craze, seem to hit the shelves every other week. ![]() There are plenty of wine books out there, and a smaller, yet not insignificant, number of books on beer. ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, there were some things I didn't like as well. ![]() However, the book was not all darkness and death, and there were many parts that were light and romantic, and helped balance the mood of the story. The murders and the clues were sufficiently creepy, and parts of the investigation were chilling, which is exactly the feel I want from a murder mystery. The mystery was handled well, and while I was able to correctly predict the identity of the killer, I actually had several different theories throughout the book, so she kept me guessing. The prose was lovely and engaging, and flowed nicely through the narrative. The city itself seemed to be a character in the story, and I would love to read more books set here. ![]() Fiona Paul painted a beautiful picture of Venice that transported me to a city of artists and canals and gondoliers and crumbling old mansions. But the problems I had with it are, I think, simply a matter of preference and not to do with the writing or the storytelling itself, so I can fully understand why so many others adore this book.įirst, the things I liked.
